In Finnish Saunas, Nudity Isn’t a Taboo – Here’s Why That Matters

In Finland, sauna bathing is much more than just a way to relax. It is a tradition passed down from generation to generation, teaching us also to view our bodies—both our own and those of others—naturally and with respect. From an early age, many Finns become used to seeing all types and sizes of bodies in the sauna without evaluating or comparing them. The sauna is a place where everyone can simply be at ease with who they are.

For Finns, the sauna is a soothing space where both mind and body can rest. Traditionally, the sauna was much more than just a place to wash oneself—it was a central part of life. It was a clean, warm space where women gave birth, food was occasionally prepared, and the deceased were washed and prepared for their final journey. Today, the sauna’s role is more about everyday relaxation.

Even today, the sauna remains an important social venue in Finland. Families, friends, relatives, coworkers and even strangers gather in the hot steam to celebrate various occasions or to unwind on the weekend. Time spent in the sauna is often naturally combined with other ways of relaxing, such as swimming in a lake or an ice hole, sipping a cold beverage, or engaging in gentle conversation.

In marketing images promoting the Finnish sauna, people are usually shown wearing towels—just like the background dancers of the Finland-Swedish band KAJ in this year’s Eurovision performance. But when you watch Finnish films or TV series, or spend a sauna weekend at a cottage with Finns, you’ll see that people often sauna naked—the towels are left in the changing room.

All Bodies Are Welcome

One of the most significant messages of the Finnish sauna tradition is body positivity: in the sauna, you see every kind of body of all ages and shapes, without anyone placed above or below another. From an early age, children learn that nudity is natural. It carries absolutely no sexual connotation in this context.

During a sauna session, it is not customary to compare or judge other people’s bodies. Uninvited touching and staring at others are also not part of Finnish sauna culture. This mutual respect and relaxed atmosphere allow everyone to feel comfortable as they are.

Finnish sauna culture emphasizes the idea that the human body is a natural part of life, something neither to hide nor be ashamed of. Nudity is an essential aspect of the sauna experience, yet it is treated matter-of-factly—it’s simply the most practical way to enjoy the heat and keep clean. For many Finns, bathing naked is so ordinary that they pay no special attention to it, as long as basic courtesy and privacy boundaries are observed.

A Safe Space for Everyone

In the sauna, everyone can be themselves. It is quite usual to find friends, and even neighbors and colleagues relaxing together. Conversations often flow while water is thrown onto the hot stones, producing the hot steam. This shared, egalitarian moment in the heat reinforces the sense of community among Finns.

The opportunity to experience one’s body as a natural part of this social and healing ritual teaches respect for oneself and for others. When nudity is not taboo and people are not categorized by appearance, the body becomes a more accepted and neutral presence.

Finnish sauna culture embodies deep-rooted body positivity and respect for diversity. The sauna is a place where body, mind, and community come together in a soothing environment.

At the heart of this culture lies an easygoing view of nudity, consideration for others, and an inherent belief that every body has equal worth. It is a tradition that has been handed down from one generation to the next and remains a strong part of everyday life in Finland—making Finnish sauna culture truly unique.
