Sleep by the Flowing Waters: Cozy Glamping in a Laawu
A Laawu is a warm, nest-like shelter that offers a wonderfully soothing vibe. Staying in one on the shores of the Kymijoki River makes you feel like you’ve become part of the flowing scenery. Finland’s first-ever Laawu accommodations rose at the Kultaa Rapids estate in summer 2021, in a spot so rare that you can admire rushing rapids right from your bed—something you won’t find just anywhere.
The Laawu itself is Finnish design from Kouvola. This simple yet stylish teepee- or lean-to–style cabin is both inviting and cozy, with a large window framing the surrounding nature. The rapids look the same at first glance, yet they’re always changing. I find myself spending nearly the entire evening nose to glass, drawn to the rush of the water in a way that reminds me of a flickering flame—its natural flow is endlessly fascinating.
Inside, everything is small-scale and chic—except the bed, which is large and just as elegant. The mattress is nice and firm, and because there are no awkward corners, you can sleep pretty much any way you like. It really feels like a snug little nest! There are a few shelves for your belongings, and the entire head of the bed extends right to the wall so your phone won’t accidentally slip into any gap overnight. Each Laawu has electrical outlets, adjustable lighting, and heating/air conditioning. In Kotka, the Laawus also feature terraces that extend your living space even closer to the natural surroundings and the rushing rapids—especially when the weather cooperates. Each Laawu accommodates two adults.

Practical Comfort by the Rapids
Guests at the Koskitila Laawus have access to shared flush toilets and shower facilities. The yard is relaxed and cottage-like—close enough to a few other buildings and guests to feel secure, but not crowded. Everything about staying here is easy, hassle-free, and pleasant. You can park right next to the yard, just a short walk of a few dozen meters to the Laawu. The bustle and services of the city are a bit farther away, making this a great place for your first taste of nature-focused accommodations. Guests also have use of a wood-fired barrel sauna, perfect for a dip straight into the Kymijoki River!
Even in a single day, there’s so much to observe by the rapids. We watch the sharp, jittery flight of deep turquoise damselflies in the reeds, see a few anglers trying their luck in the foaming water, spot a white-throated dipper bobbing at the water’s edge, and now and then a fish breaks the surface. We even get to witness a few impressive rain fronts roll through. From the Laawu by the rapids, you’re truly in the front row but still safely tucked away—just right for taking in nature’s spectacular performance.
