A night in a real treehouse in Finnish forests

In Kemiönsaari island, Southwestern Finland, you can stay in a real treehouse, where cozy beds and the gentle murmur of the Nordic forest lull you into a good night’s sleep.

The atmosphere in the treehouse at Storfinnhova Metsäkylä is like a cozy nest. The afternoon light filters through the forest, warming the forest floor cooled by the breeze. It touches the ferns and bilberry bushes that are just preparing to bear fruit. A clear stream babbles through the forest and widens into a sand- and rock-bottomed pond in front of the smoke sauna, where bathers cool off in its icy water. We have arrived at Storfinnhova Metsäkylä (Storfinnhova forest village).

The hexagon-shaped treehouses charm as a small cluster nestled in the forest. The stairs are wooden and steep, just as you would expect from a real treehouse. Step by step, the journey leads upwards. The wooden door creaks open, revealing a view that makes the weary traveler sigh – what inviting beds await!

There are three beds, made up with mattresses, blankets, pillows, and white linens. With the summer forest chirping, rustling, and dazzling outside, it feels tempting to slip inside the treehouse and close the door for a moment. Just for a moment, to rest and savor that wonderful feeling you dreamed of as a child, of having your own treehouse to happily hide in!

The treehouses at Metsäkylä are more than what you dreamed of as a child, though. In addition to the beds, the atmosphere is enhanced by windows with curtains, a floor rug, and underfloor heating that would certainly be useful in colder weather. A battery-powered hurricane lamp flickers beautifully as the evening darkens, and you can plug in your devices to charge overnight.

The delightful scent of the forest creeps into the treehouse from outside. The treehouse feels like an exciting hideaway, a nest, and I wonder if birds feel the same way in their nests. Outside, nature is in full summer bloom – inside the treehouse, there is a serene and sheltered silence. Before drowsiness completely takes over, I pack a towel and swimsuit and head down to the smoke sauna, where wonderfully gentle steam already awaits, with dozens of candles glowing.

After refreshing moments in the sauna and the stream, it is wonderful to climb back to the treehouse. I draw the curtains over the windows, turn off the hurricane lamp, and curl up under the blanket in my bed. If I hadn’t wet my hair in the stream, I would sleep with the door open, but now I close it behind me and drift off into the warm twilight. The forest’s silence and the night’s haze last only a fleeting moment. Soon, I sense through my sleep how the early morning light and birdsong rise outside, but in the sheltered treehouse, sleep continues well into the morning.
