Finnish animals

Finnish wild and semi-wildlife

Meeting wild creatures in the nature is always something to remember.

In Finland you can also meet some semi-wild creatures: reindeer. About a one third of Finland belongs to the reindeer herding district. The southern line of this district goes between Oulu and Kajaani, so if you’re travelling north from those two cities, you’re likely to see some reindeer. The further North you go, the better chances you’ve got!

Also bears, wolves and lynx roam around in our forests. However, one does not have to be afraid of them – these animals flee way before you could even notice them. However it is not rare to spot a deer or an elk in Finland. No need to be scared of them either!

Did you know?

Reindeer are not wild animals: they are semi-domesticated. Every reindeer has an owner. However, in some southern parts of Finland, such as Salamajärvi national park, one can see the wild ancestor of reindeer: the Finnish forest reindeer. They are bigger and much more timid than ordinary reindeer!
