A Donkey Walk in Finnish Forests

Miniature donkeys are a rare sight in Finland—but some of them live right on the edge of beautiful sandy forests in Loppi, where visitors can join them for a peaceful and grounding walk in nature. These gentle animals invite you to slow down and become fully present in the moment. Unlike hurried hikers, donkeys take their time—and help you notice the small details of the forest around you.

Before heading out on the trail, you’ll get to know your donkey at the stable. While brushing its soft coat, a connection begins to form. Then, guided by the host, you’ll start your walk across scenic field paths and into the heart of the forest. The donkeys are led on halters and may initially test whether they can sneak a bite of grass—but soon fall into step with their human companions.

What Makes This Experience So Special?

  • A unique chance to hike with rare miniature donkeys
  • Ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for a mindful outdoor activity
  • Enjoy forest paths, peaceful pine groves, and scenic hilltop views
  • Picnic break with the donkeys resting beside you
  • Learn to connect with animals—and yourself—in a whole new way

At the top of a nearby hill, the group can take a break at a scenic lean-to shelter. The donkeys carry their own snacks (and yours!) in small saddlebags. In the shade of pine trees, you’ll find a quiet spot to enjoy your lunch, while the donkeys contentedly munch hay beside you. These social animals love to stay close, and the shared moment is both relaxing and heartwarming.

The walk continues along forest roads lined with spruce, with light conversation and soft donkey steps keeping the pace. Even if a donkey accidentally steps on your foot, there’s no harm done—at around 70 kilograms, they’re strong but surprisingly light. During the walk, it’s easy to reflect on how animals and humans experience nature differently. A donkey doesn’t judge or hide its feelings—and you can’t fool it with nervous energy. It gives honest feedback if your lunch is missing or your route isn’t up to its standards.

By the end of the 2–4 hour excursion, the donkeys are returned to their herd, well cared for. As for the people? They return home smiling, recharged, and maybe even a bit enchanted.

What Is a Miniature Donkey?

Miniature donkeys are descendants of small donkeys originally brought from Africa to Sicily, where they were bred for life on narrow city streets. Today, they’re sturdy and sure-footed hikers—but also charmingly sensitive. A puddle or a little rain might stop them in their tracks. On forest treks, they carry picnic supplies for both their human and themselves in their packs.
