The Land of a Thousand Lakes: Finland is the Perfect Destination for Paddleboarding

Stand up paddling has become a popular sport in recent years, and it can be enjoyed almost anywhere as long as the water is at least knee-deep. Paddleboarding is a type of paddling where the paddler stands on a surfboard-like board and leisurely moves through the water. With approximately 300 000 lakes or ponds, Finland is an ideal destination for paddleboarding.

Observing the surroundings from a standing position, which in my case is over 1.5 meters, provides a new perspective on lake landscapes. On the clear-water lake Iso-Melkutin in the municipality of Loppi, this standing height is particularly advantageous, as it offers stunning views both above and below the water – all the way to the lake bed!

SUP boards are now sold in almost every supermarket, as well as in sports and hobby stores. The prices of the boards range similarly to tents, starting from just over a hundred euros and going up to a thousand euros. Durable, high-quality, and well-equipped boards can even be used for long-distance water hikes.

For beginners, it’s convenient and affordable to try paddleboarding with a rental board. Depending on the rental agreements, you can also take a board for a weekend, making it ideal for exploring clear waters. SUP boards are available for rent across Finland at many waterside locations.

From the parking area at Iso-Melkutin, it’s about a 700-meter walk to the lakeshore. My board was easily carried this distance in its backpack-like carrier. However, carrying a SUP board for over a kilometer is not ideal, so it’s wise to choose a body of water that’s easily accessible.

An inflatable board is prepared for the water by pumping it full of air and attaching the fin and ankle leash. Always carry a life jacket, a dry bag for any gear or snacks, a water bottle, and a protective pouch for your phone. The board can carry a lot of gear, but it’s important to remember that anything placed on the deck is likely to get wet.

Under my shorts and t-shirt, I wore a swimsuit, anticipating the possibility of a swim – either intentional or accidental. Although the day was slightly windy, I was so comfortable on the board that there was no need to dive into the water.

Paddleboarding is perfect for those who also enjoy leisurely walks. The scenery changes slowly, progress is effortless and silent, and the experience is almost meditative. On Iso-Melkutin, my gaze was constantly drawn beneath the surface, feeling as though I was floating over submerged trees and other underwater wonders. I felt like a spatial airship.

Even a moderate wind, over 5m/s, can turn this otherwise leisurely activity into a workout, so for those seeking relaxation, it’s best to head out on very calm days. More experienced paddlers can find challenges in stronger winds or more flowing waters.
