Sauna Hermanni is situated at the corner of a residential building, and a small black-and-white sign guides bathers inside. Upon entering, one may encounter other sauna-goers arriving with their own bags, ready to relax and socialize. Sauna Hermanni upholds the tradition of public saunas, allowing visitors to bring their own drinks in moderation. Excessive drinking or drunkenness is frowned upon, and the sauna’s host, Mika, is known for his open and cheerful demeanor, earning praise from regulars.

The sauna’s history is deeply embedded in its space, with decades-old photographs hanging along its corridors, serving as a reminder of the many people who have relaxed here over the years. Visitors can buy light refreshments and small snacks from the kiosk, but the atmosphere remains calm and respectful of tradition. The sauna also offers traditional cupping services, providing a nostalgic experience for those seeking a step back in time.
Mika explains that before the 1950s and 1960s, showers were uncommon both in the countryside and in cities in Finland, so people had to wash themselves in saunas. In cities, Finnish people established public saunas almost on every block, and the customers typically came from the surrounding area.

Sauna Hermanni has cultivated a loyal and dedicated customer base, with many regulars who return time and time again. Conversations on the sauna benches usually revolve around light and pleasant topics, such as family updates, travel, or even artificial intelligence. Political discussions are generally avoided, and the sauna’s atmosphere is one of community and inclusiveness, where newcomers are always warmly welcomed.
“Today, most of our customers are between 30 and 60 years old, although the youngest are under 1 year old and our oldest customer is 90,” Mika says. “They can go outside to cool down, even in winter, and stay as long as they want—we don’t have time limits. Most customers stay for 2 to 3 hours.”

Mika, the sauna’s owner, values authenticity and a relaxed atmosphere over profit-seeking motives. This approach has made Sauna Hermanni a place where people can unwind and enjoy the company of others. Its sense of community and warm vibe have made it a favorite for many.

If you’re looking to experience an authentic and friendly Finnish sauna, Sauna Hermanni is a must-visit. You can also follow the sauna on social media, on Instagram and Facebook, to stay updated on its events and atmosphere. See also: www.saunahermanni.fi.
