Mustio Ironworks in Raseborg Surprised with Its Winter Beauty

Our small ironworks tour around Raseborg over the weekend had already taken us through Antskog, Fiskars and Billnäs when we finally arrived in Mustio (Svartå) for the grand finale. As in the previous destinations, it was quiet here as well – apart from a duck drifting on the rippling water, we were completely alone. The winter scenery was unbelievably beautiful!

The yellow Mustio Manor, one of Finland’s most valuable manor buildings, basked in wonderfully sunny tones amid an otherwise blue-and-white winter landscape. I have heard many ghost stories about the manor and couldn’t help imagining ghosts watching our movements in the courtyard from behind the windows. It would be fun to stay here someday and see whether I might actually start believing in ghosts. You can check the opening hours on its website.

The park’s large and varied trees, beautiful buildings and statues were all coated with a layer of snow. Time seemed to stand still on that frosty day in the bright midday light. The floating Water Lily Path was frozen – as was the swimming beach, where I had secretly hoped to find an ice hole – but near the bridge leading to the opposite bank, we saw open water.

Near the summer theatre we found a bridge offering stunning views, especially in the direction of the sun. The bridge had widened sections and picturesque old-fashioned lampposts – perfect conditions for taking a lovely photo together.

The sunlight filtered through the trees along the shore, pure white and glowing. Sea mist shimmered above the Mustio River and looked beautiful in the light.

I took so many photos. I had not expected wintertime Mustio to spoil us with a view like this. It is wonderful to stroll here in the warmth of summer, but I have never managed to capture images this beautiful here during the summer season.

On the other side of the bridge, a stone granary stood out clearly from the mostly wooden buildings we had seen. The old grain store now houses meeting facilities.

A solitary female mallard swam out from beneath the bridge, waddled along the edge of the ice for a moment and quacked loudly at us. It then drifted across the river toward the shelter of the forested shore before finally deciding to take flight. We did not encounter anyone else during our entire visit.

We had been so cold throughout the whole trip that by now we were truly ready to head home and hope that our old house would feel warm inside. Still, I found myself thinking that in slightly less biting weather it could be nice to visit nearby Korpudden for a hike as well – there are a couple of campfire sites there. You can find a link to an introduction to Korpudden below.
