5 Best Skiing Spots in Helsinki

With the arrival of winter, Helsinki transforms into a true skiing city. During snowy winters, Helsinki delights skiers with a 200-kilometer network of ski trails, which allows one to traverse almost the entire city on skis from the central park.

Paloheinä

Paloheinä is a classic for skiing enthusiasts in Helsinki. Its diverse network of trails offers routes suitable for skiers of all levels. The terrain loops range from 1.8 kilometers to 7.5 kilometers, with the longest ones also being the most challenging in profile. Additionally, there is a 10-kilometer field loop in the area. As Paloheinä is among the most popular skiing spots, the trails are likely to be best maintained.

Starting point: Suomen Latu Paloheinä, Pakilantie 124.

Tali

The Tali area is one of Helsinki’s central spots for movement. The golf course area features a total of 6.5 kilometers of ski trails, where skiers can enjoy the expansive scenery. Especially in the spring sun, the trails offer an easy experience. Most of the network runs through relatively flat terrain, but the trails leading to the top of Tali add variety.

Starting point: Talin Puistotie.

Herttoniemi Sports Park

The top destination for skiers in Eastern Helsinki is found in Herttoniemi. The sports park’s trails are 1, 2, 3, and 5 kilometers long. With forests and elevation differences, it offers more than enough to immerse in the atmosphere of winter nature activities. From Herttoniemi, there’s also a longer traditional style ski trail along the shores of Vanhankaupunginlahti.

Starting point: Siilitie.

Pirkkola Sports Park

The Pirkkola Sports Park is a fantastic starting point for ski trails in the middle of the central park. The park’s forested area of 66 hectares offers 3 and 5.5-kilometer trails. When snow conditions permit, connector trails lead from Pirkkola to Paloheinä, Tali, and Laakso. You can also access the route from the famous Maunula lodge, known for its delicious doughnuts.

Starting points: Maunulan maja Pirkkolan Metsätie 6 (Swimming Hall yard).

Malmi Airport and Kivikko

A 5.7-kilometer ski trail circles Malmi Airport, and in Kivikko, there is a 3.75-kilometer loop. Both can be skied in both free and traditional styles. And if winter plays tricks, the skiing season continues in the Kivikko Ski Hall, which, as a snow-sure destination, serves the ski community of Southern Finland.

Starting point: Tattariharjunkuja (Malmi Airport) and Savikiekontie (Kivikko).
