A Guided and Deeply Relaxing Sauna Experience Just Outside Helsinki: Silent Sauna
Nuuksio visitors can now experience a truly relaxing sauna moment, guided by a professional sauna host. The Silent Sauna is a two-hour, immersive, multi-sensory and deeply relaxing experience, in which the sauna host’s ritual and the calming silence of the sauna support recovery and help release stress.
One of our sauna hosts, Piritta Kallio, says she got the idea for the experience while sitting alone in Finnish Nature Centre Haltia’s Saivo sauna, simply enjoying the hot steam, or ‘löyly’.
“The idea grew out of my love for sauna, years of experience with meditative practice, and the realization that the two could be combined. I truly believe that in these hectic times, there’s a real need to travel from the mind to the heart and find genuine stillness,” Piritta explains.
“You don’t need any prior knowledge of sauna culture or meditative practice to take part. Come exactly as you are,” Piritta encourages.
Book the Silent Sauna for your group
You can book the Silent Sauna experience for your own group by emailing [email protected]. As long as your group’s dynamics allow for it, the gender composition of participants is not an issue for us.
The experience is most relaxing for groups of up to 4–5 people. Although the Saivo sauna is spacious, we keep group sizes small to make the experience as restorative as possible.
For visitors coming from abroad, this is a wonderful chance to experience an authentic, guided Finnish sauna ritual amid nature, just a stone’s throw from Helsinki. Few experiences capture the essence of Finnish culture as fully as sitting quietly in the heat of a sauna, surrounded by silence, with an experienced host gently guiding the whole journey. It’s an easy and welcoming way to step into one of Finland’s most cherished traditions, even if you’ve never set foot in a sauna before.
Haltia is easy to reach not only by car but also by bus from Espoo center.
The Silent Sauna can be hosted in English and/or in Finnish.

How the Silent Sauna unfolds
Welcome to the sauna
The sauna host welcomes participants and explains how the experience will proceed. Any sense of hurry or pressure is left behind right at the door of the Saivo cabin: undressing and washing before moving into the sauna happen calmly in Saivo sauna’s comfortable washing facilities, where quality washing products are also provided.
The Silent Sauna
The idea is to bathe as wordlessly as possible, to enjoy the silence, and — once the mind’s restless thoughts have quieted — to hear the voice of the heart. Participants can relax, even with eyes closed, while the sauna host quietly works their magic: creating the löyly, ensuring a steady supply of fresh air, and moving the air in the sauna so the heat spreads evenly.
You may leave the sauna at any time, to drink water or cool off outside on the scenic terrace, which is directly accessible from the Saivo cabin.
Fresh drinking water is available for bathers both in the changing room and in the cabin.
After-relaxation
After the Silent Sauna, the mind, body and heart have settled into a wonderfully drowsy, relaxed state. So that the contrast between the sauna and the outside world doesn’t feel too abrupt, we hold a guided relaxation and stillness moment afterwards in the Saivo cabin. You can relax however suits you best — sitting or lying down. Light savory snacks and warm tea are served.

A participant’s experience of the Silent Sauna
Our team member Sointu took part in the Silent Sauna for the first time in late winter, and shares her experience here:
“I went into the experience feeling both excited and a little nervous. I love sauna, but I’ve always bathed either alone, with family, or among strangers at the public pool. A guided sauna experience in a small group was completely new to me, and I didn’t quite know what to expect.
The moment I stepped into the space, it felt like I no longer had to think about anything. I just had to be. Dim lighting, the scent of fresh birch, and the sound of wind outside created a calm atmosphere.
When the sauna host invited us to close our eyes, I noticed myself relaxing very quickly. At first I paid attention to the gentle movement of the air and the host’s calm, steady work, but little by little my thoughts grew quiet. I remember thinking: “My mind has never been this still. This feels good.” I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt such a sense of calm. All sense of time disappeared completely.
After the sauna, we stepped out into the quiet winter evening. The cool air against warm skin felt refreshing, and pausing there in wool socks made me appreciate the surrounding peace even more.
Finally, we sat down together again. After a moment of silence, conversation began to flow completely naturally. Nothing felt forced or awkward — everyone was genuinely present. The calming effect of the experience stayed with me all the way home. I slept so soundly that night, and for several days afterward I felt noticeably more at ease and grounded than usual.”
