This cottage in Åland is a dream come true for the reclusive soul!

A cozy cabin, a seaside sauna, the lapping sea, and absolute peace. No one else around to disturb you. Just being. This dream that many harbor can become a reality, for instance, on the northern side of the Åland Islands at Sviskär, where you and any companions will be transported to a hermit’s cabin at an agreed-upon time. Human contact ends there, as the next encounter with visitors will not be until the return trip. The experience of having your own island can begin!

Staying on a private island feels incredibly luxurious. You can leave your belongings scattered about as you wish, with perhaps only the whimsical sea breeze acting as a potential thief. You can wander between the hermit cabin and the sauna carefree, even dancing around in the nude if you like, as no one will be dropping by unexpectedly. The level of peace and solitude is such that relaxation becomes a physical experience.

The hermit cabin on Sviskär is so well-equipped that you essentially need to bring only your personal clothing and any essential tools or medications. All needs for maintaining and enjoying the cabin have been thoughtfully provided, and water is available on the island in moderation. It’s wise to bring your own food supplies, as popping to the shop isn’t an option. However, it’s highly recommended to order a meal service, as delicious meal kits from Silverskär’s kitchen can be delivered to the island. These partially prepared meals need to be finished off by you, perhaps on a gas stove.

At the hermit cabin, you can enjoy the atmosphere of a deserted island and its isolation around the clock. Time loses its significance, with the weather playing a more pivotal role. If the wind blows from the northwest, it’s a good idea to explore or go fishing on the other side of the island. The sun warms the rocks by midday in the summer. You can use the sauna in any weather.

The cabin features a small fireplace stove that warms not only the room but the heart as well. Four beds are placed against the back wall of the cabin, offering deep and sweet sleep. In the middle of the night, you can opt for the seaside rocks instead of the outhouse and discover what a sea buckthorn looks like under the midnight sun.

Time spent at the hermit cabin is an intense experience for those not accustomed to solitude in their daily lives. For those familiar with secluded retreats, the experience is primarily an inspiring maritime one. For city dwellers, having their own island and its (mental) distance from infrastructure can be a profoundly moving experience, bringing them closer to nature and offering insight into what it might feel like to be a true hermit.

Be prepared in the following ways:

  • The hermit cabin on Sviskär is perfectly well-equipped, from bathrobes to fishing rods.
  • Bring some personal treats, and it’s advisable to order the meal service for at least one day – the offerings are heavenly delicious!
  • Bring weather-appropriate clothing
  • Bring also entertainment as per your preference, such as a book, crossword puzzles, or a board game.
